At Berserker Street State School we focus on our four core learning areas – English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities and Social Science (history and geography). We also provide specialist music and physical education classes for all students. In addition, all students are able to study art, health and technology.
Berserker is currently teaching AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) as the LOTE program for Prep to Year 6. The AUSLAN program is co-ordinated by the Principal and a CODA (child of deaf adults), NAATI accredited, AUSLAN interpreter. The program is delivered by native speakers of AUSLAN. Students are learning how to communicate in AUSLAN as well as developing a deep understanding of Deaf culture and Deaf history. This program is providing our students with the skills and confidence to converse effectively with the Deaf community and to have an understanding and respect of their culture.
Computers are used across all learning areas. Information, Communication Technologies (ICT) are a part of every day learning at Berserker Street State School. Every classroom is connected and we maintain a large computer network, with interactive whiteboards connected to the internet and network in every single learning space. We also have established an Innovation Centre in which students are inspired to design and build LEGO Robotics as well as creating 3D art work with the 3D printer.
We aim to support our curriculum with excellent resources and have one of the best resourced libraries in Rockhampton. Our teacher librarian/head of curriculum is an expert and is able to support classroom learning with ideas, resources and contacts.
All teachers spend a half day each term working in year level teams with the Head of Curriculum to develop quality programs and assessment for their classes.
