Active after school sport
Berserker Street State School has been delivering a federally funded program designed to encourage children to be more active and have fun. The after-school sport’s program offers afternoon tea, fun, safe and inclusive activities that provided children with the opportunity to develop essential motor skills, positive social interaction and an enthusiasm for being active.
We aim to provide a variety of sports to ensure there is something for everyone. So far we have included cricket, softball, soccer, circus games, Aussie Rules, volleyball, basketball, touch football, frisbees and more.
Students from Year 1 to Year 6 are involved and we find that as well as the development of physical skills, there is some positive social development. Children were always keen to assist with setting up activities; preparing afternoon tea for the group and with packing up the equipment at the end of the day. We have also had positive interaction with parents and older siblings who have joined in our games on occasions while waiting for us to finish.
A final spin off from the program has been students inquiring about the availability of clubs where they would be able to continue to play the sports they had been enjoying.
